NH Rising Stars Update

August 21, 2009 • General

I will recap rounds 1-5 when we hit the rest day, but for now just a few quick comments on my first two rounds. In the first round game against GM Ljubojevic, we reached a very bizarre middlegame in which I was probably a bit worse. However, I was able to outplay my opponent towards the end of time control and reached a winning endgame only to simply hallucinate and forget where the White bishop ended up. This led to a draw. In the second round, I once again obtained a very promising position against GM van Wely after two inaccuries in the middlegame. With time control looming, I simply blundered horribly allowing a very cute e4-e3-e2 trick which led to an endgame in which Black has a fortress. What can I say about the first two games? I felt that I have played very well in general, but I am getting tired at critical points in the game. This probably has something to do with my health which has been steadily going downhill since the first day I arrived. Alas, I will now go back to sleep until the round.

  1. You travelled around the world during the last week it’s normal you feel a bit tired. Yet yours 2 games show more energy than the other boards. > Do you mean that 38.Kd3 was the correct move? It’s just a start, a rising start… Best regards from Japan

  2. Good luck Naka! We’re all rooting for you in the upcoming games!

  3. I have to admit I was a bit upset to see game 1 especially only end in a draw. I’ve noticed this effect before in the first round or so with you. You have a rather unorthodox schedule, living in the US, traveling to Europe, and with this tournament, the added trip to Japan, as Jacques pointed out… Good luck for the remaining rounds.

  4. What a genius UR~!★ Great Job~! Despite of the time differential~!
    Respectable~!

  5. Well you did it today! Congratulations for the result and the great battle. In my last post I said that your games showed more energy than any others games. Today, I feel your KI has more dynamic ideas than all others games put together… So many draws with almost symetrical pawns structure.. Good luck for the remainind rounds. (PS: I know quite well GM Alex Chernin he taught chess to me and Mr. Moriuchi in Budapest, few years ago. He was very kind with us. I know he is on the rising stars side (Even we have the same age…). My “Bonjour” to him.

  6. Glad your getting rest CHAMP. Its what you need the most. Hang in there we are all behind you here. Your will today to win round 3 was amazing !! We may need to send you sick all the time lol. all the best smallville!

i hope you will be 100 % strong in the next games!

    win win and win!

the reason the top GM’s in the world is not striving to become a world champion , it is because there comfortable in there position, the other is number two, the other is number 3 and so forth.

it takes a lot of energy and effort to become a world champion and nobody is more determined than you are!

Way to hang in there with KID 21…Ne4!! You showed tremendous courage by playing through being sick. Don’t sweat the Van Wely endgame. Hang tough. Keep moving on. Remember: You have lost the fear of losing…

    We’re proud of you!

No fear. Don’t resist feeling ill. It’s ok. Just play and have fun. It’s chess and if you think it’s just not your tournament, no problem. Just play. Then a good rest up. We are behind you all the way. The energy will return.

  14. You should be working out at least 3 times per week for good stamina. When you’re in Vancouver, come down to the Art Gallery and we can talk more and maybe get some speed chess in. I’m the only young black guy out there, so come check me out. Peace bro.

  15. Sorry to hear about you getting sick, i hope you can recover quick. Hopfully the rest day is enough to make you feel better.

    Hi Hikaru,

This is John in St Louis. I shot your winning moment in st louis and posted it on youtube and we met and have a brief chat and you gave me your autograph.

I am no expert at chess, but I would think playing a lot of chess in recent times like you have at top levels, can only make you better player. Learning how to win when you do not have your best stuff is something I am not sure applies to chess because in baseball you do not have to complete the full game to get the win. In chess, as you well know you have to go the distance. Now that might be a interesting tournament, where you can call the bull pen or a pinch hitter………….has that ever been done?

Good luck in the future and I believe you can be world champion someday!!!
